No Money, No Problem: 7DFPS 2014 Edition Part 2

I posted about several interesting 7DFPS entries on Saturday, but with 146 games, some were bound to be overlooked the first time. Here's another list of cool, polished, or just plain fun entries from this year's 7DFPS

Paint The Town Red
South East Games' Paint The Town Red is a gory brawler, with a block-headed artstyle that probably brings to mind Gravity Bone. Trapped in a pool hall, use whatever you can grab to survive as long as possible: your bare fists, knives, chairs, and more. The copious blood and cool details like smashing a bottle against a wall to create a makeshift glass blade makes Paint The Town Red an enjoyable experience. The developers plan to expand the game into a larger release; you can vote for it on Steam Greenlight.

Duality
Duality is a dimensional-swapping stealth game. Using the otherworldly prism in your hand, you can move between worlds, taking advantage of barriers and pathways that may only exist in one dimensions to avoid guards and hide from their line of sight. It's stylish, tricky, and definitely worth checking out.

Shootmephrenia
Set in an shadowy landscape of mirrors and alleys, you have one goal in Shootmephenia: shoot yourself. At first, the task is simply, merely ricocheting the bullet between surfaces, but soon you'll have to make desperate leaps over the dark void to catch your projectile. A visually stylish and challenging first person puzzle game.

Motor Money Crash!
A simple fast-paced shooters. Race around the arena, blasting deady cubes with your turret and pistol, and jump off ramps in your jeep. Not very complex, but worth a try

War of Toys
Toy soldiers fight to the death with all manner of weaponry across a massive living room. The shooting is responsive and War of Toys feels quite polished for a jam game. The toy soldier theme allows for interesting level aspects, such as climbing a desk to reach higher ground.

Exposure
A cool multiplayer-only game that's essentially an abstract take on Predator. One player is a visible Hunter armed with traps and the ability to see footprints, the others must avoid him as an invisible Hunted. Really nice particle and lighting effects, and the concept makes for some tense matches.

God Complex
Red vs Blue...meets Giest (or Ghost Trick). Jump from soldier to soldier to influence the war between red and blue soldiers. Pretty simple, but fun, with some nice Unreal Engine 4 visuals

No Money, No Problem: 7DFPS 2014 Edition

Another year, another 7DFPS. Last year brought us some really unique experiences, such as SuperHOT, Beyond Perception, Probably Archery, and many others. Here's a selection of interesting entries from this year's Seven Day FPS Challenge. You can browse the full list of entries here.

SHIFT
Developer Shawn Beck's last game was the hectic reflex-testing Velocibox, and his 7DFPS entry combines that game's style and speed with some dodge-heavy shooting action. Armed with dual rapid-fire cannons, SHIFT challenges you to race through mazes of tight corridors, teleporting through laser gates and deftly evading turret fire. It's fast, frenetic, and fun.

grepr
grepr is a sci-fi stealth game, where evade guards and collect data as a small drone. Able to stick to surfaces and leap across vast distances, you must avoid enemy line of sight or take them out by colliding with their weak points. It's a short game, but the visuals and acrobatic stealth gameplay makes it worth checking out.

Endless Express
Endless Express is a short game about exploration and time. You missed your train; now you must take the connecting trains to get home, traveling between varied stations. Holding the Left Mouse button brings up your watch, allowing you to keep track of what trains are coming and going based on the timetable at each station.

Frail Shells
Frail Shells is a game about war and life after war. It's a short yet thought-provoking experience that delves into PTSD

Strange Gravity

If you're familiar with games with Galcon, then Strange Gravity won't feel too alien. The concept is the same: eliminate your enemies by moving your forces and strategically capturing planets. But rather than the 2D style of similar games, Strange Gravity puts you in the middle of the action, directing fungus to defeat the unstable red growth before the sun rises. Simple controls and an interesting take on a well-known concept makes Strange Gravity a game worth checking out.

RADE
A hectic dog-fighting game as you shoot down blimps, jets, ships, and more across a sky filled with arcing projectiles. A simple but fun spectacle.

Where's Tango
Where's Tango is essentially Spy Party for one. Armed with your sniper rifle and dossier of information, you must figure out who your targets are from a list of information, such as skin color, behavior, and more

The Best of Seven Day FPS - Part 2

Last week, I recommended eleven fun, interesting games from this year's Seven Day FPS (or 7DFPS). But there are so many promising entrees that I decided to recommend some more.

Here are ten more 7DFPS games you definitely should try

SuperHot

This four episode entry is all about time, The faster you move, the faster time moves. Stand still and the world is in slow motion, allowing you to sidestep between bullets and approach your enemies. Each of the four episodes grows more puzzle like, as you only have a few bullets before having to disarm another enemy. An awesome concept, cool minimalist visuals, and fun gameplay makes SuperHot stand out.

Submerged

Survive as long as you can in this eerie underwater shooter. Descend into the dark depths, lit only by your flares and lasers, as enemies emerge from the murky blackness around you. 

Death Smashers

A hectic arena shooter. Feels very polished (for a 7DFPS game) and the three weapons have great heft. Expect a lot of jumping and backwards shooting while evading hordes of enemies and projectives.

Roguelike FPS

Survive as long as you can in a world stylized to look like a 3D version of old school roguelikes. The interesting visual design makes this worth a try

Infinity Castle

Your only goal is to escape a procedurally generated castle. With nothing but your flashlight, you must find the next waypoints, Don't take too long or you'll soon find yourself on the run from the castle's guardian.

Match-3 Shooter

More of a concept than a full game, but still fun. A 3D match 3 game combined with FPS mechanics.

Cold Curve

You are the projectile. Charge up your jump and smash enemies while dodging hazards. A great sense of movement.

Transparencies

Inspired by Hotline Miami, Transparencies is all about split second planning and attack. Observe your enemies through the transparent walls, pick you weapons (which you can throw to stun), move fast, and fire accurately.

A Cosmic Forest

A visually relaxing experience of abstract exploration. 

Galaxel

Defeat enemies by removing the ground beneath their feet in this interesting FPS.

The Best of Seven-Day FPS 2013 - Part 1

So the 2013 Seven Day FPS (or 7DFPS) Challenge is over. Dozens of games, all designed in seven days and around the theme of exploring the first person perspective in interesting abstract ways, have been submitted and are available to play.

Last year brought us Wolfire Game's Receiver and many other inventive games. What are this year's gems?

Here are eleven of this years's most promising or just plain fun games.

Beyond Perception

Explore an art gallery where each picture is a gateway to a new level. It feels very polish, the minimalist design is very cool, and in my opinion, with more levels, could very well be the successor to Antichamber. Each level challenges you to learn its rules and change your perspective in order to reach the exit. 

FlipFlop

Reach the exit. Seems simple enough. But not when you can shift from floor to wall and flip gravity with ease. And you'll need those abilites to dodge spikes and other hazards/

Probably Archery

The tagline couldn't sum up Probably Archery any better. "QWOP/Surgeon Simulator meet archery" is exactly what Probably Archery is and is just as fun and hilariously frustrating as its inspirations. 

Discoverie

A voxel graphics, first-person roguelike. The enemies may seem cute but don't underestimate them. Because then you'll be dead. Discoverie is a fun challenge with a great art style. 

Reflections

Step 1: Study the enemy patrols. Step 2: Shoot them down. Only problem? The enemies are only visible in reflections. A cool mix of a memory challenge and quick first person shooting.

2091: Jim's Odyssey

Disorienting, hard to control, but then that's just realistic. It isn't easy controlling a jetpack in zero gravity as you attempt to repair your space craft.

Alignment

Similar to the indie puzzle platformer QUBE, you extend orange cubes to form platforms. The twist is that they only extend enough to alight your location. Not the most complex game, but a fun minimalist puzzle platformer worth a try.

Outdoor Camping for Deboned Poultry

Now this game...it's absolutely mind bending. The goals are navigation and collecting pickups, but the presentation and perspective warping visuals make Outdoor Camping stand out. Just have that motion sickness medication ready.

Shambles

Made by Minecraft's creator Notch, Shambles is a zombie shooter with a dynamic twist. Civilians, soldiers, and zombies all roam the map. Killing zombies give you points, civilians health, and soldiers ammo. But it's not simple to survive when all three factions interacting. A blast to play.

Doppelgunner

A challenging puzzle platformer about solo co-op. Now how does that work? Use the Doppelgun to make or erase clones of yourself and solve puzzles.

Rocket Jump Quest

Simple but fun, use the iconic rocket jump to collect orbs as fast as possible. Not the most complex game, but has a lot of potential for speed-running.
